The Others
2022–2023
DISCIPLINE: Visual Identity
CLIENT: Ioana Paun
“The Others” offers access to the affective intimacy of another person. We have created a chain of three relational situations in order to discover the diversity of human responses to the display of emotions. The distance or closeness between two humans is, maybe, only a matter of synchronization. “The Others” was initiated in 2021, while director Ioana Păun was having her residency at MuseumsQuartier Wien/tranzit.org, in the context of social distancing. It can be seen as a series of post-pandemic reflections.
The event took place in Bucharest (Romania), at Teatrelli Theatre, Goethe Institut, and the public space in between, in September 2022 and January 2023. Discover more about the theatrical experiment here.
Design process:
The poster displays a used moisturizing face mask, peeled out of one's skin, suggesting there is room for an infinity of possible expressions and reactions, and conceptualising the idea of anonymity. The poster purposely enhances a singular object because each performance is for one participant and one actor.
The booklet features a text produced by curator Synne Genzmer that talks about epigenetics – from the perspective of art history intertwined with the clinical description of the phenomenon. For accompanying her interventions, I used a personal digital archive of scanned items such as edible objects (raw eggs, meat, vegetables), parts of the human body, artefacts, or natural components (plants, shells, insects, etc.). The uncommon illustrations aim to activate tactile and visual senses through bold organic textures. The face mask seen on the key visual is a personal experiment on my own skin and then scanned in-house and barely post processed.
